private guitar lessons

Private lessons are by far the the best and quickest way to progress on any instrument. Internet and group lessons are fine but cannot be tailored to the particular needs of the individual. Problematic areas such as strumming technique, picking technique, hand position and general bad habits can only be addressed when the tutor can see what you are doing.

I do offer private lessons in electric, acoustic, classical guitar, classical theory and popular music theory. I also teach all the requirements for guitarists in GCSE, AS and A2 level exams. I am a specialist guitar examiner with the RGT/LCM and examine electric, acoustic, classical and bass guitar.

Lessons are specifically tailored to suit the individuals needs and aspirations. However, I do insist that all students learn the basic core elements of playing guitar. These are chords, scales, strumming and picking technique, basic theory knowledge and aural awareness. I introduce these elements using a wide variety of repertoire but regardless of the style/styles a student wishes to learn the basics have to be learnt.

All students must practice! Beginners should do at least 15 minutes every day, intermediate players should do at least 30 minutes a day and advanced players an hour. Noodling away in front of the telly does not constitute practice, it can be useful for drilling certain motor skills but does not count as practice time. Students are often amazed at how quickly they progress but this only comes with regular practice.

I have a 100% pass rate with my students in electric, acoustic and classical exams and teach from complete beginner to advanced. Some of my students have gone on to be professional guitarists and teachers themselves.

I travel out to students in my local area, but students from further away taking diploma exams sometimes visit me. My current charges are £18.00 per half hour.
